China Launches Juncao Technology Training in Zimbabwe to Boost Agricultural Innovation

China has officially launched its first Juncao technology training program in Zimbabwe. The initiative, which kicked off on April 14 in Mashonaland West Province, marks a milestone in China’s commitment to supporting sustainable agricultural development across the continent.

The training, led by a team of Chinese agricultural and technical experts, brings together over 50 participants across the province. The program aims to equip participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in Juncao cultivation and its applications in mushroom farming and livestock feed production.

Juncao, meaning “mushroom grass” in Chinese, is a hybrid grass technology developed by Chinese scientists that can be used to grow edible mushrooms and provide nutritious feed for livestock. It is a low-cost, sustainable solution that has already transformed farming practices in several developing countries.

Zimbabwean officials and local stakeholders have welcomed the project, noting that it aligns with the country’s broader agricultural modernization goals. Participants expressed optimism about the long-term benefits of the initiative.

“Our grazing land is becoming limited due to increased urbanization and climate change. So it’s advantageous to grow Juncao and edible mushrooms on my farmland, so that my livestock can have sufficient feedstock, and I can boost my household income” said by a farmer participating in the inaugural training program.

The Juncao technology training program in Zimbabwe reflects the growing momentum of China-Africa partnerships rooted in technology transfer, knowledge exchange, and sustainable development.
