Chinese Medical Team Expands Free Healthcare Outreach in Zanzibar

On the sunlit islands of Zanzibar, a long-standing medical partnership between China and Tanzania is once again translating into tangible benefits for local communities, this time through expanded free healthcare outreach targeting underserved populations.

In mid-March 2026, members of the 35th Chinese medical team stationed in Zanzibar carried out a series of free medical consultations, bringing essential health services directly to residents who often face barriers to care. The initiative forms part of a broader campaign aimed at strengthening grassroots healthcare and deepening people-to-people ties between China and Africa.

The outreach builds on the “100 Medical Teams in 1,000 Villages” program, launched earlier this year, which combines clinical services with preventive health education. At a recent event on Pemba Island, Chinese and local health professionals provided examinations, treatment advice, and disease prevention guidance to hundreds of residents.

Health officials in Zanzibar have welcomed the initiative, noting that such programs enhance primary healthcare capacity while addressing immediate medical needs. The campaign also integrates specialised efforts such as schistosomiasis prevention – an ongoing public health concern in the region.

China’s medical engagement in Zanzibar dates back more than six decades, making it one of the longest-running examples of Sino-African health cooperation. Since 1964, successive Chinese medical teams have treated millions of patients, trained local professionals, and introduced new medical techniques.

Recent outreach efforts continue this tradition. In 2025, a Chinese medical team provided free treatment to more than 5,000 residents during a multi-day clinic, covering specialties ranging from surgery and gynecology to traditional Chinese medicine.

Similarly, earlier community clinics have delivered services to hundreds of patients in rural and peri-urban areas, offering everything from diagnostic screenings to acupuncture and dental care.

As one local health official observed during a previous outreach, such initiatives bring “professional and compassionate medical care right to people’s doorsteps,” while also strengthening bilateral friendship.

Access to quality healthcare remains uneven across parts of Zanzibar, particularly in rural communities. By deploying mobile clinics and community-based services, Chinese medical teams are helping bridge these gaps – reducing travel costs for patients and easing pressure on local health facilities.

In addition to treatment, the teams emphasise prevention and knowledge-sharing. Educational sessions, often delivered in Swahili, cover hygiene, chronic disease management, and early detection practices. This dual approach reflects a shift toward sustainable healthcare development rather than short-term intervention.

The donation of medicines and basic supplies further complements these efforts, ensuring that patients can continue treatment after consultations.

The medical outreach underscores the wider scope of China–Tanzania relations, which span infrastructure, transport, and investment.

One of the most iconic symbols of this partnership is the TAZARA Railway, a landmark project that continues to facilitate regional trade and connectivity. Recent agreements to modernise the railway highlight ongoing cooperation in infrastructure development.

China has also emerged as a major investor in Zanzibar, contributing to hospital construction, public health programs, and broader economic development.

In the health sector specifically, collaboration has expanded to include disease control programs, training initiatives, and equipment support – demonstrating a comprehensive approach to strengthening healthcare systems.

The current wave of medical outreach aligns with the 2026 China–Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, emphasising human-centered cooperation.

For many Zanzibari residents, the presence of Chinese doctors represents more than medical assistance – it is a symbol of enduring friendship and shared commitment to well-being.

As China and Tanzania continue to deepen their partnership, initiatives like this highlights how bilateral cooperation can directly improve lives at the community level – one patient, one village at a time.
