Algeria Inaugurates First Confucius Institute to Deepen Academic Ties with China

Algeria has taken a major step forward in its cultural and educational diplomacy with the launch of its first Confucius Institute at the University of Algiers II. The institute, established in partnership with China’s Northwest Normal University, aims to foster stronger academic and cultural exchanges between the two nations.

At the inauguration ceremony, Kamel Baddari, Algeria’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, emphasized that the institute will enhance academic cooperation and deepen cultural understanding between Algeria and China. Chinese Ambassador to Algeria Dong Guangli described the launch as “an important milestone in academic and scientific cooperation between the two peoples.”

The move builds on earlier initiatives: in 2024, the University of Algiers II launched its first Chinese language program in collaboration with Northwest Normal University, enrolling 38 students in its first class. Plans are underway to gradually expand the program and deepen engagement.

Said Rehmani, Rector of University of Algiers II, noted that the institute aligns with the university’s outward-looking vision and commitment to fostering international scholarship. Meanwhile, Wang Zhanren, President of Northwest Normal University, underscored that this institute will serve as a bridge, promoting joint research, faculty exchanges, and youth training, while raising the international profile of both institutions.
