Ambassador Kojo Bonsu to Welcome President Mahama and First Lady on Official Visit to China

Ghana’s Ambassador to China, Kojo Bonsu, is set to welcome President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama as they embark on an official state visit to China on October 12, 2025. The visit marks a renewed chapter in Ghana–China relations, underscoring both nations’ shared commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation across diplomacy, trade, and sustainable development.

Ambassador Bonsu, appointed earlier this year as part of President Mahama’s first batch of diplomatic envoys, has expressed readiness to ensure a successful and impactful engagement. Preparations at the Ghanaian Embassy in Beijing are in full swing, with the ambassador and his team coordinating a series of high-level meetings and events that will define the tone of Ghana’s foreign policy direction toward China in the coming years.

During the visit, President Mahama is expected to hold bilateral discussions with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, focusing on enhancing cooperation in infrastructure, energy, technology, and agriculture. The President will also attend business forums and investment meetings in Beijing and Fujian Province aimed at promoting trade, technology transfer, and sustainable industrial growth.

First Lady Lordina Mahama will participate in the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equality, where she is expected to highlight Ghana’s progress on women’s inclusion and social entrepreneurship, areas that align closely with China’s cooperation priorities in Africa.

Speaking ahead of the visit, Ambassador Kojo Bonsu reaffirmed his commitment to driving Ghana’s national interests in China. He stated,

“Information reaching me shows clearly that the Chinese government and business community are interested in investing and doing business in Ghana. As the Ambassador, I am ready to champion this cause and secure meaningful partnerships to the benefit of the Ghanaian people.”

The ambassador also emphasized that the visit would focus on promoting local value addition, skills development, and technology exchange, which he described as crucial for Ghana’s next phase of industrial transformation.

The Ghana–China partnership, established in 1960, has grown into one of Africa’s most comprehensive bilateral relationships, encompassing infrastructure development, education, cultural exchange, and financial cooperation. Chinese-funded projects, including the Bui Hydroelectric Dam, the Kpong Water Supply Expansion Project, and ongoing industrial park initiatives have significantly influenced Ghana’s modernization drive.

President Mahama’s visit to China comes at a strategic moment as Ghana seeks to reposition itself as an investment-driven economy focused on local participation, innovation, and sustainability. Both governments are expected to sign new cooperation agreements that align with Ghana’s long-term development goals and China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

As Ghana deepens its engagement with China, Ambassador Bonsu’s role becomes even more vital in shaping a partnership that reflects mutual respect, economic balance, and shared prosperity. The upcoming visit not only signals diplomatic renewal but also reaffirms Ghana’s intent to leverage global partnerships for national growth.
