The government of Benin has announced plans to significantly expand its exports to China, signalling a renewed push to strengthen trade relations and position the West African nation more strategically within global supply chains.
Speaking at a recent trade engagement, Shadiya Alimatou Assouman, Benin’s Minister of Trade and Industry, emphasised the country’s ambition to diversify its export portfolio beyond traditional commodities such as cotton. The minister highlighted the growing demand within China’s vast consumer market as a key opportunity for Beninese products, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, agro-processing and light manufacturing.
This move aligns with broader trends in China-Africa trade, where African countries are increasingly seeking to tap into China’s expanding middle class and consumption-driven economy. Reports from multilateral institutions, including the World Bank, indicate that African exports to China have been gradually diversifying, with value-added products gaining traction alongside raw materials. Analysts note that improved logistics, trade facilitation measures and preferential market access have contributed to this shift.
Benin’s export expansion strategy is also supported by China’s continued policy of opening its market to African goods. Under frameworks such as the Forum on China- Africa Cooperation, China has pledged to increase imports from Africa and reduce trade barriers. In recent years, China has introduced zero-tariff treatment for a wide range of products from African countries with diplomatic relations, creating new pathways for export growth.
Beyond trade, Benin and China maintain a multifaceted bilateral relationship that spans infrastructure, investment and development cooperation. Chinese companies have been actively involved in major infrastructure projects in Benin, including road networks, port modernization and public facilities. These projects are widely seen as critical enablers for trade, improving connectivity and reducing the cost of moving goods to international markets.
In addition, cooperation in agriculture has been gaining momentum. Chinese technical assistance programmes have supported Beninese farmers in improving crop yields and adopting modern farming techniques. This aligns with Benin’s broader goal of transitioning from a raw commodity exporter to a producer of processed and higher-value agricultural goods.
Cultural and educational exchanges further reinforce the partnership. Scholarship programmes and training initiatives have enabled Beninese students and professionals to study in China, fostering skills transfer and strengthening institutional ties. Confucius Institutes and cultural programmes continue to promote mutual understanding, complementing economic engagement.
Experts argue that Benin’s renewed export strategy reflects a pragmatic shift toward leveraging global partnerships for sustainable development. By targeting China’s large and evolving market, Benin aims not only to increase export volumes but also to stimulate domestic industrialisation, create jobs and enhance economic resilience.
As global trade dynamics continue to evolve, the deepening economic relationship between Benin and China underlines a broader transformation in Africa-China cooperation – one increasingly defined by value addition and shared growth ambitions.
