Zimbabwe and China have inaugurated a new agricultural demonstration village in Shamva District, Mashonaland Central Province. This initiative aims to transition local farmers from subsistence farming to a more business-oriented approach, drawing inspiration from China’s successful poverty alleviation strategies.
The demonstration village, the second of its kind in Zimbabwe, offers hands-on experience in sustainable farming practices. These include advanced irrigation systems, high-yielding drought-resistant seed varieties, precision farming techniques, and integrated livestock-crop systems. The project also incorporates agro-processing facilities, renewable energy solutions, solar-powered cold storage, and training centers for skills transfer.
At the launch ceremony, Zimbabwe’s Deputy Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development, Vangelis Haritatos, emphasized the project’s role in fostering innovation and bridging traditional knowledge with modern technology. He highlighted the initiative as a testament to the enduring friendship and strategic partnership between Zimbabwe and China, rooted in mutual respect and a shared vision for sustainable development,
Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Zhou Ding, noted that the initiative resonates with China’s journey of development and poverty alleviation. He stressed the importance of supporting rural residents, especially those from marginalized communities, in breaking the chains of poverty and unlocking their full potential.
Local farmer Nomalisa Zindi shared her experience, stating that the initiative has been pivotal in transforming subsistence farming into small businesses, fostering self-sustainability and economic empowerment among rural households.
This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of both nations to rural revitalization and the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices, serving as a model for South-South cooperation in addressing global development challenges.
