China Grants Ghana $30 Million to Build Modern Market in Aflao, Boosting Cross-Border Trade

Ghana has secured a $30 million grant from the Government of China to build a modern market in Aflao, a key infrastructure project aimed at boosting regional trade and fulfilling President John Mahama’s 2024 election campaign promise to build and modernize key markets boosting regional development.

The agreement was signed at Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on July 7, 2025 between Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa on behalf of the Government of Ghana and the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Tong Defa on behalf of the Chinese Government.

The planned Aflao market to be situated in the Volta region is expected to serve as a major trading hub between Ghana and neighboring country Togo, helping to connect buyers and sellers from across the countries while creating a more dignified and efficient space for economic activity. A significant step toward improving cross-border trade and local commerce in the region.

A similar grant amount from China was previously used to construct the impressive Kotokuraba Market in Cape Coast during the Mills-Mahama administration, a project widely praised for its modern design and economic impact.

The project is another example of the growing and evolving partnership between Ghana and China. As the Sino-Africa relationship deepens, investments like this continue to highlight China’s role as a reliable development partner.
