Chinese Enterprises in Uganda Drive Community Development Through Robust CSR Programmes

The Ugandan government has praised more than 200 Chinese companies for making significant contributions to community welfare through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, according to Ugandan Third Deputy Prime Minister Rukia Nakadama. Revealed in the newly launched Chinese Enterprises in Uganda CSR Report 2024, these efforts demonstrate how corporate investment is touching lives beyond traditional business operations.

The 71-page report, compiled by the China Chamber of Commerce in Uganda, highlights several key areas of impact including; renovation or construction of schools and donations of scholastic materials, awarding of scholarships and skills-transfer programmes, free medical outreach camps, and support to communities affected by natural disasters.

Nakadama noted that Uganda-China relations have grown into “multidimensional cooperation” spanning trade, infrastructure, health, education, agriculture, cultural exchange, and defense. She emphasized that these CSR activities are helping to ensure that China’s presence in Uganda is not just commercial but also socially transformative.

Chinese Ambassador to Uganda Zhang Lizhong echoed this sentiment, indicating that Chinese investment under initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) has reached “new historical heights.” He called the CSR report not just a record of past achievement, but a springboard for future collaboration, especially in rural outreach, green growth, and digital transformation.

One noteworthy contribution during the CSR report launch was a generous donation of lighting equipment to Uganda Women’s Effort to Save Orphans (UWESO), exemplifying how CSR projects are targeting vulnerable populations and civil society groups.
