From Scholarships to Security: China Advances Its Global Security Initiative in Africa

In a strategic move signaling a shift in global security dynamics, China has recently awarded military training scholarships to more than two dozen Somali National Armed Forces officers. Ambassador Wang Yu underscored Beijing’s commitment, stating: “China will not be absent” as Somalia strengthens its defenses in the face of extremism and evolving peacekeeping responsibilities.

This initiative falls under China’s broader Global Security Initiative (GSI), aimed at fostering common, cooperative, and sustainable security, even as Western-led alliances retrench. A few months earlier, some Somali officers completed training in law enforcement, internal security, and border control in China, reflecting Beijing’s incremental influence in building regional security architecture.

Amid preparations for a phased withdrawal by the African Union’s peacekeeping mission, China’s growing role addresses a critical capability gap for Somalia. Beijing’s engagement also includes anti-piracy cooperation through the Somali Coast Guard, aligned with Chinese maritime interests in the Horn of Africa and the Gulf of Aden.
