Chinese Community Extends Humanitarian Aid to Gbenyiri Conflict Victims in Ghana

Chinese communities in Ghana have stepped up in response to the Gbenyiri conflict in the Savannah Region, donating relief supplies valued at over GH₵2 million (approximately US$163,000) to help thousands displaced by recent ethnic violence.

The donation, organized by Greenhouse International Development Group Ghana Limited and the Ghana Association of Chinese Societies, included essential items such as rice, tomato paste, blankets, buckets, mosquito coils, detergents, soap, sanitary pads and drinking water. These supplies are being distributed to affected communities in the districts of Bole and Sawla-Tuna-Kalba.

Savannah Regional Minister Salisu Be-Awuribe expressed deep gratitude to the donors, describing the support as both timely and historic. He said, “On behalf of the people of Savannah and the President of Ghana, I want to say a big thank-you.” He added that the relief items would reach those who need them most.

The conflict started in late August 2025, triggered by a land dispute between the Brifo and Gonja communities, resulting in 31 deaths, injuries, widespread displacement, and significant destruction of farms and businesses. More than 40,000 people were forced from their homes as a result.

This act of solidarity by the Chinese community underscores the strength of bilateral goodwill and highlights how community-led aid can play a vital role in alleviating human suffering in volatile conflict zones. The gesture also coincides with the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Ghana and China.
