Ghanaian Minister Praises Chinese Company for Revolutionizing the Local Auto Industry

Ghana’s Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry Minister, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has publicly commended Zonda Tec Ghana Limited, a Chinese-led automobile assembly and distribution firm, for its transformative impact on the country’s automotive industry. Her remarks came at a high-profile event in Accra where the company launched new Great Wall Motor SUVs and motorcycles and reopened its Dzorwulu showroom.

The minister highlighted that Zonda Tec, which is the exclusive distributor for Great Wall Motor (GWM) in Ghana, has reshaped vehicle accessibility – from lightweight passenger cars to heavy-duty trucks, while creating hundreds of jobs and transferring manufacturing technology to the local economy. She said the Chinese investment in expanding Zonda’s facility signaled strong private-sector confidence in Ghana’s industrial future.

Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Iddie Adams, also joined in the praise, noting that Zonda Tec has already employed at least 600 Ghanaians, with plans to expand further as its operations grow. Zonda Tec’s Managing Director, Yang Yang, thanked Ghana for its welcoming environment and revealed that the company plans to open a training school attached to its assembly plant – a vital step for building local automotive expertise.

Zonda Tec Ghana isn’t new to the local market: the company has been assembling both heavy-duty trucks (in partnership with Sinotruk) and passenger vehicles in-country for years. According to Zonda, it operates two assembly plants in Ghana – one specialized in heavy vehicles, the other in light vehicles and supports a network of at least eight showrooms across the country.

The rising popularity of Chinese-made vehicles among Ghanaians is another part of this story. According to Zonda’s leadership, models like GWM SUVs, pickup trucks, and even earth-moving machines are gaining traction, especially after value-added tax (VAT) on locally assembled vehicles was reduced, making them more affordable.
