Kenya is strengthening its drive toward a digital, low-carbon energy future and Chinese technology giant Huawei is emerging as one of its most influential partners. During the 2025 Huawei Kenya Energy Summit, Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum James Opiyo Wandayi commended Huawei for helping modernise Kenya’s power ecosystem through digital power solutions, AI-enabled grid systems, and renewable-energy integration. His remarks underscored a growing consensus: Kenya’s energy transition is accelerating because of tech partnerships that bring both innovation and long-term investment.
At the summit, Huawei unveiled its “Digitalization White Paper for the Energy Industry,” outlining a four-pillar roadmap that includes digital green power plants, automated smart grids, multi-source energy coordination, and autonomous energy-management systems. The plan aims to cut operational losses, strengthen real-time grid monitoring, and support Kenya’s heavy reliance on geothermal, solar, and wind power – resources central to the country’s strategy for energy resilience.
Huawei’s expanding energy footprint builds on decades of China-Kenya cooperation. In recent years, the company partnered with Davis & Shirtliff to roll out affordable solar inverters and storage systems, making clean energy more accessible to households and businesses. The Kenyan government has also collaborated with Huawei on cloud computing security, digital-skills training, and national innovation programs – part of a wider push to grow Kenya’s digital economy.
China has become a central partner in Kenya’s green-transition agenda, investing heavily in geothermal development, renewable-energy industrial parks, and digital infrastructure. These projects align with Kenya’s National Energy Policy (2025-2034), which prioritises clean power generation and a more intelligent, automated energy-distribution network.
Kenya’s praise of Huawei signals more than diplomatic goodwill – it reflects a strategic shift toward smart, sustainable energy systems that can meet rising demand while supporting economic growth. For Nairobi, Huawei’s integrated digital-energy solutions help accelerate the nation’s clean-energy ambitions, improve grid stability, and lower long-term operational costs.
