Chinese home appliance manufacturing giant Midea Group has announced the opening of two new factories in Egypt ahead of its official sponsorship of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Midea Group and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) also signed a sponsorship cooperation agreement at the headquarters of Midea Group in Foshan, south China’s Guangdong province, signaling deepened commitment to the African consumer market.
The company, a long-standing leader in home appliances, has built a washing machine factory and a refrigerator factory in Egypt, expected to begin production in August and November 2025 respectively. Egypt’s strategic position between the Middle East and Africa, combined with supportive industrial policy, has made it an appealing base for Midea’s regional expansion. Midea’s factory launch in Egypt shows a significant shift in Sino–Africa economic engagement, from trade supply chains toward local manufacturing and job creation.
Industry analysts point to a low penetration rate of major household appliances in many African markets, indicating tremendous room for growth. Midea joins peers such as Haier, Vanward, Hisense, and Skyworth, which have already set up production operations in Egypt, South Africa, and other parts of the continent. As more Chinese firms localize production on the continent, African economies stand to benefit through technology transfer, skills development, and increased export capacity.
