Somalia Seeks Stronger Strategic Cooperation with China in Trade, Security, and Development

The Somali government has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening its bilateral relationship with China across multiple strategic fronts: economic development, security, and reconstruction. This comes amid high-level meetings and diplomatic exchanges where both parties emphasized mutual trust and long-term partnership.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud commended China’s ongoing support in areas such as humanitarian assistance, scholarships, and efforts to safeguard Somalia’s national security and territorial integrity. He expressed Somalia’s readiness to work with Beijing to expand cooperation in trade, infrastructure, and peacebuilding.

Chinese officials, including Foreign Minister Wang Yi, have echoed the sentiment, highlighting the importance of turning diplomatic promises into concrete outcomes. Key areas of focus include enhanced trade linkages, market access, infrastructure development, human capital formation, and increased people-to-people exchanges.

Critically, Somalia views its strategic relationship with China as central to its recovery and reconstruction path. After decades of conflict, reconstruction, and ongoing challenges in governance and security, the government sees China as a stable partner able to support its developmental ambitions.

Somalia has also committed to adhering to important diplomatic tenets such as the One-China policy, reinforcing its geopolitical alignment with China. This follows the elevation of China-Somalia relations to a strategic partnership under frameworks such as FOCAC, reflecting growing institutional ties and expectations of delivery.
