Zambia Launches Its Largest Solar Power Plant Constructed by PowerChina

Zambia has commissioned the Chisamba Solar Plant, a 100 MW grid-connected solar photovoltaic project which is the largest of its kind in the country to help address its persistent energy shortfall. Developed by state-owned Zesco through its Kariba North Bank Extension Power Corporation and funded at a cost of US $100 million, the initiative marks progress toward Zambia’s target of adding 1,000 MW of solar capacity to its national grid by the end of 2025.

Constructed by PowerChina International Group Limited under an EPC contract, and financed by Stanbic Bank and Zesco, the first phase began construction in July 2024 and includes a step-up substation and grid link. A second 100 MW phase is planned to commence shortly.

The official inauguration ceremony saw President Hakainde Hichilema joined by senior government officials, representatives from the Chinese Embassy, and PowerChina executives. President Hichilema commended PowerChina, noting how the partnership has evolved from state-driven cooperation to include robust business-to-business and people-to-people connections.

Chinese Embassy Counselor Wang Li emphasized the significance of this project, affirming that it symbolizes the strong strategic and cooperative partnership between China and Zambia. She reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Zambia in achieving its solar energy ambitions.
