China Continues Medical Support in Africa with New Zimbabwe Health Agreement

The Zimbabwean cabinet has officially approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on health cooperation with China. This latest agreement underscores deepening bilateral relations and China’s enduring role in supporting Africa’s medical infrastructure and training.

Signed between Zimbabwe’s Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals and China’s Hunan Provincial People’s Hospital, the MoU focuses on enhancing cooperation in respiratory and critical care medicine, particularly in areas related to COVID-19 as well as airway management and respiratory support to patients. The agreement is expected to usher in a new phase of knowledge exchange, capacity building, and collaborative treatment strategies between the two institutions.

According to the government’s official communication following the weekly cabinet meeting in Harare, the partnership aims to support Zimbabwe’s efforts to improve specialized healthcare delivery by facilitating medical training, joint research initiatives, and the exchange of medical personnel and technologies.

China and Zimbabwe have enjoyed more than four decades of medical cooperation. Since 1985, China has dispatched over 230 medical professionals to Zimbabwe. Currently, a 12-member Chinese medical team is stationed at Parirenyatwa Hospital, offering clinical services and training.

China’s efforts across the country have included vaccine donations, construction of health facilities, deployment of medical teams, and public health training, playing an important role in boosting the country’s health services.
