DR Congo and China Set to Deepen Ties as New Chinese Embassy Opens in Kinshasa

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with China, signaling a new chapter in bilateral cooperation as the Chinese Embassy’s new premises was inaugurated in Kinshasa on Monday.

Speaking at the official ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior and Security, Jacquemain Shabani, emphasized the importance of the milestone, describing it as a springboard for deeper collaboration across multiple sectors. “We see this new embassy not just as a building, but as a symbol of our enduring friendship and a platform to expand cooperation in infrastructure, social development, and beyond, to bring tangible benefits to our people,” Shabani stated.

The ceremony, which drew senior government officials, diplomats, and local leaders, underscored the growing momentum in DRC-China relations, which have spanned decades and continue to evolve with the changing dynamics of global diplomacy and development.

Chinese Ambassador to the DRC, Zhao Bin, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the role of cultural exchanges in enhancing people-to-people exchange. “The deep friendship between the Congolese and Chinese people remains the driving force of our relations. We will continue to host cultural initiatives like the ‘Chinese Film Week’ and welcome more Congolese friends to experience our new diplomatic home, fostering mutual understanding and respect,” Zhao said.

The enhanced diplomatic infrastructure comes amid expanding cooperation between the two nations, particularly in mining, infrastructure, and education. Observers note that this renewed commitment will open doors for new joint projects aimed at supporting the DRC’s development priorities while reinforcing China’s role as a key partner in Central Africa.
