Ethiopian Airlines Expands China-Africa Trade Links with New Cargo Route to Macao.

Ethiopian Airlines has launched a new cargo service to Macao, solidifying its role as a major bridge in global logistics. The new route marks the airline’s 10th dedicated cargo destination in China and is expected to significantly enhance the movement of goods across Africa and China.

The inaugural flight took off earlier this week and will operate twice weekly, transporting up to 400 tons of cargo per week. The service is part of Ethiopian Airlines’ continued effort to deepen its presence in the Asian market and support the fast-growing e-commerce and trade sectors linking China, Africa, and other global markets.

The Macao route complements Ethiopian’s existing cargo services to major Chinese cities including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong. By tapping into the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, a major global hub for trade, technology, and innovation, Ethiopian Airlines aims to support seamless supply chain solutions for businesses in both regions.

Ethiopian Airlines has been a pioneer in China-Africa aviation links and over the years, the airline has become a symbol of South-South cooperation, providing a critical air bridge between Africa and Asia. Currently, the airline operates the largest cargo network in Africa and boasts one of the most modern freighter fleets on the continent, including Boeing 777 and 737 freighters.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ethiopian Airlines emerged as a key partner in global cargo operations, transporting essential medical supplies and vaccines. Its cargo division, Ethiopian Cargo & Logistics Services, was instrumental in ensuring Africa’s access to global supply chains during times of crisis.

The launch of the Macao cargo route also supports growing partnerships with Chinese e-commerce and logistics firms, who see Africa as a burgeoning market. The Greater Bay Area is home to several tech and logistics giants, and Ethiopian Airlines’ enhanced presence allows for smoother last-mile delivery and greater efficiency in cross-border trade.

Ethiopian Airlines’ continued investment in logistics and connectivity positions it as not only Africa’s leading carrier but also as a key enabler of global trade. Its country director for China, Aman Wole Gurmu, expressed excitement about the new route, noting its potential to strengthen collaboration with e-commerce supply chains in the Greater Bay Area.
