In a significant step towards strengthening economic collaboration and enhancing responsible mining practices, the Association of China-Ghana Mining (ACGM) was officially launched in Accra on April 3, 2025 at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra. The launch brought together high-level dignitaries, industry stakeholders, government officials, leading Chinese mining enterprises operating in Ghana and members of the diplomatic corps to celebrate a new chapter in China-Ghana relations, particularly in the mining sector. The establishment of ACGM reaffirms China’s commitment to responsible and sustainable industry practices in Ghana.
Notable dignitaries at the event included Hon. George Opare Addo, Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Ibrahim Mahama, CEO of Engineers and Planners, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa in attendance among others.
ACGM initiated by several leading Chinese mining companies, aims to deepen cooperation between Chinese and Ghanaian mining enterprises, nurture investments, and promote technological synergy. The Association seeks to promote shared growth, responsible mining practices, community development, and technology transfer between China and Ghana. The Chairman of ACGM, Tang Zhenjiang, outlined the Association’s vision to move beyond profit and serve as a catalyst for positive transformation in Ghana’s mining sector in his inaugural remarks.
“Through this Association, we will unify industry consensus, integrate resources, uphold our social responsibilities, and benefit community development,” he stated. Tang also announced the establishment of a fund to promote education, social welfare, environmental protection, and community development in Ghana.
Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, who was a special guest of honour, representing President John Dramani Mahama, said in a keynote address that his ministry is eager to work closely with the ACGM to enhance and streamline Chinese investments in Ghana’s mining sector.
He further stressed the importance of leveraging China’s expertise in underground mining, low-grade ore development, and mining-related technical training to boost efficiency and global competitiveness in Ghana’s mining industry.
Chinese Ambassador to Ghana Tong Defa noted that the association’s establishment serves as both a bridge for win-win cooperation between China and Ghana in the mining sector and an important platform for strengthening communication among the government, businesses, and local communities. “Ghana’s lush forest and clear waters are as valuable as gold and silver,” he said, emphasizing the need for the Association to maintain a balance between mining development and environmental sustainability.
The ambassador urged the association to help create more local jobs, increase the added value of minerals, and foster the healthy development of mining cooperation.
