Guinea’s President Doumbouya Hails China Partnership as Cornerstone of National Development

Guinean President Mamady Doumbouya has reaffirmed that practical cooperation with China remains central to Guinea’s nation-building and economic development. Speaking in Conakry during a meeting with Sun Yong, China’s newly appointed Ambassador to Guinea, President Doumbouya emphasized that Beijing’s support continues to play a vital role in driving energy, infrastructure, and industrial growth.

Ambassador Sun Yong, presenting his credentials, pledged China’s readiness to strengthen bilateral ties and implement the consensus reached between the two heads of state. He underscored China’s commitment to ensuring that cooperation delivers tangible results that benefit both nations.

Guinea and China share a longstanding partnership dating back to 1959, when Guinea became one of the first sub-Saharan African nations to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China. Over the decades, this relationship has evolved into a cornerstone of Guinea’s development strategy, marked by major infrastructure and energy projects that have transformed the country’s economic landscape.

Among the most notable achievements is the Kaleta Hydropower Plant, built with Chinese assistance, which has significantly boosted Guinea’s power supply. Additional projects like the Kinkon Hydropower Plant, road networks, and bridges have strengthened national connectivity and industrial capacity, key drivers of President Doumbouya’s modernization agenda.

China has become Guinea’s largest trading partner and main export destination, particularly for bauxite, which is critical to global aluminum production. Beyond mining, both countries are now focusing on value addition, industrial processing, and sustainable job creation to diversify Guinea’s economy.

Cooperation has also extended to emerging sectors such as technology, education, and digital innovation. A newly established Digital Cooperation Academy aims to train Guinean youth in artificial intelligence, data science, and cybersecurity, advancing the government’s goal of building a modern, knowledge-driven economy.

In health care, the Guinea-China Friendship Hospital and multiple medical missions have strengthened public health systems, while China-assisted agricultural projects continue to enhance food security and rural livelihoods through mechanization and technical exchange.

Experts emphasize the importance of ensuring that projects align with environmental safeguards and community benefits, while maintaining fiscal responsibility in development financing. President Doumbouya’s remarks reaffirm Guinea’s strategic intent: to deepen engagement with China through partnerships rooted in mutual benefit, innovation, and shared prosperity. From hydropower to digital transformation, the Guinea–China relationship continues to embody a vision of sustainable growth and inclusive development for the future.
