Chinese President Xi Jinping has extended warm congratulations to Peter Mutharika on his election as President of Malawi. In his message, Xi highlighted the strong and friendly partnership between China and Malawi, and expressed readiness to deepen bilateral cooperation under Mutharika’s leadership.
Xi recalled that since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2007, China and Malawi have enjoyed a history of smooth cooperation, built trust, and achieved fruitful outcomes across multiple sectors. He commended Mutharika’s past contributions and described the two nations as sincere, friendly partners.
Looking ahead, Xi pledged to work with Malawi to deepen “mutually beneficial cooperation,” reinforce political trust, and jointly develop their strategic partnership to benefit both peoples.
This congratulatory message comes amid Mutharika’s return to power following the 2025 election, in which he succeeded Lazarus Chakwera. The expression of goodwill underscores China’s ongoing diplomatic engagement in Africa and a continued focus on strengthening ties with Malawi at a time of political transition.
