In a commemorative seminar hosted near Cairo by the Chinese Embassy in Egypt, Beijing promoted its newly launched Global Governance Initiative (GGI) against the backdrop of the 80th anniversary of Allied victory in World War II. The event, held at the historic Mena House Hotel where the 1943 Cairo Declaration was signed, brought together senior Egyptian officials, representatives of the Arab League, political parties, academics, and think-tanks.
Zhang Tao, Charge d’Affaires at the Chinese Embassy, outlined outcomes of the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin and reaffirmed China’s commitment to fostering “a peaceful and better future” through the GGI. He said China is ready to partner with Egypt and other nations to advance the framework.
With Egypt’s Foreign Ministry, the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs, and other institutional stakeholders present, attendees praised the GGI as a timely initiative that could help shape a fairer international system amid rapid global change. The initiative was appreciated as aligned with the growing voice and influence of the Global South.
During the seminar, remarks highlighted the importance of remembering the lessons of WWII, not to stoke division, but to prevent repeat paths of aggression and hegemonism. Zhang stressed that the anniversary is more than symbolic; it serves to highlight the relevance of sovereign equality, multilateral cooperation, and respect for the rule of law.
