The People’s Education Press (PEP) of China has donated more than 900 books to 13 “Chinese Corners” located in secondary schools across Abuja. The donation was made at the China Cultural Center in Abuja in a ceremony held on September 11, with the goal of boosting Chinese language education and cultural understanding between Nigeria and China.
The package includes textbooks for learning Chinese and English-language editions of books on Chinese culture, all tailored for use in these “Chinese Corners” – dedicated spaces in schools where students can immerse themselves in Chinese language and culture.
Muhammed Sani Ladan, Director of Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Secondary Education Board, praised the donation, saying it will have long-term benefits for both students and teachers. He remarked, “Education is life, wealth, and freedom… you have genuinely given us life.”
PEP President Huang Qiang, speaking via video link, noted that the donation responds to an identified need from his visit to Nigeria in the previous year. Huang said the initiative will help cultivate more promoters of China-Nigeria friendship.
The “Chinese Corners” scheme in Abuja has been running since 2013, under a partnership between the Chinese Embassy, the China Cultural Center, and the FCT Secondary Education Board. Nigerian teachers trained in these programs help lead instruction in Chinese, thereby expanding access to language skills and cultural exchange.
