Wu Opera Staged in Kinshasa: China Brings Classical Chinese Culture to DR Congo’s Capital

The timeless traditions of China’s cultural heritage were on vivid display in Kinshasa, as a troupe from China’s eastern province of Zhejiang staged a performance of Wu Opera in the DR Congo capital. This cultural event, held under the auspices of the Chinese Embassy, drew audiences of art lovers, diplomats, and members of the general public eager to experience this five-century-old operatic form.

Wu Opera, also known as Jinhua Opera, is renowned for its distinctive lyrical singing, vivid costumes, stylized movement, and rich narratives drawn from Chinese folklore and classical literature. Its performance in Kinshasa reflects China’s efforts to deepen people-to-people cultural exchanges with Africa.

The Second Vice President of the DRC Senate, Modeste Bahati Lukwebo, in his remarks, highlighted that such performances help strengthen cultural understanding, mutual respect, and friendship between the two nations.

Local cultural figures in Kinshasa praised the event as an uplifting moment, saying it sows seeds of curiosity and appreciation for Chinese culture among Congolese audiences. Many attendees noted that experiencing live Wu Opera was their first exposure to this genre, and expressed gratitude for its authenticity and emotional resonance.
