China has officially handed over four assisted renovated stadiums to Senegal, marking a milestone in the two nations’ longstanding partnership. The handover ceremony took place at the Leopold Sedar Senghor Stadium in Dakar, symbolizing the culmination of a project that began in 2022.
The renovation initiative, one of the largest Chinese-aid projects in Senegal, included the modernization of the Senghor Stadium in Dakar and local stadiums in Kaolack, Diourbel, and Ziguinchor. These upgrades are expected to enhance the country’s sports infrastructure and foster greater community engagement in athletic activities.
At the handing over ceremony, Khady Diene Gaye Senegal’s Minister of Youth, Sports, and Culture spoke about the fact that the event is not just a handover ceremony but a significant moment that reflects the strong friendship between Senegal and China. She highlighted the historical significance of the Senghor Stadium, originally constructed with Chinese assistance in the 1980s, and now renovated through this collaborative effort. “This renovation not only improves the stadium’s facilities but also reflects our ever-deepening cooperation in sports and culture,” She stated.
Li Yan, Chargé d’Affaires at the Chinese Embassy in Senegal, reiterated China’s commitment to supporting Senegal’s economic and social development. “We are willing to work hand in hand with Senegal to elevate bilateral cooperation across various fields, including sports, and to usher in a new chapter of closer and more fruitful relations between our two countries,” she remarked.
This project underscores China’s growing influence in Africa through infrastructure development. By investing in key sectors such as sports, China aims to strengthen diplomatic ties and promote mutual growth. The renovated stadiums are anticipated to serve as venues for national and regional events, contributing to the advancement of sports and unity within Senegal and beyond.
