South Sudanese Healthcare Workers Embrace Mandarin to Strengthen Medical Collaboration

Over 70 healthcare professionals in Juba, South Sudan have embarked on a Chinese language course aimed at enhancing communication and collaboration with their Chinese counterparts. This initiative marks the fifth such program since its inception in 2021, reflecting the growing importance of linguistic and cultural exchange in international healthcare partnerships.

Yousif Deng Riak Deng, Director of Programs at South Sudan’s Ministry of Health, emphasized the strategic value of this educational endeavor. “Learning Mandarin not only bridges communication gaps but also solidifies the bond between our nations,” he stated during the course’s opening ceremony. He highlighted that China’s contributions, including the donation of advanced medical equipment, have significantly improved the country’s diagnostic and treatment capabilities, reducing the need for citizens to seek medical care abroad.

Huo Ying, Chargé d’Affaires at the Chinese Embassy in South Sudan, noted the global rise in Chinese language, attributing it to China’s extensive international engagements. “Proficiency in Chinese enables South Sudanese medical professionals to better understand China’s culture and its contributions to global health,” he remarked.

Dr. Isaac Maker, Medical Director of Juba Teaching Hospital, acknowledged China’s ongoing support since South Sudan’s independence in 2011. He cited the recent completion of the first phase of the hospital’s expansion and modernization project, with the second phase underway. He noted that, China donated the hospital’s first modern CT scanner enhancing diagnostic services.

Du Changyong, leader of the 12th Chinese medical team in South Sudan, shared insights into the mutual learning experiences between Chinese and South Sudanese medical staff. “We’ve fostered harmonious relationships, learning from each other’s languages and cultures, which has enriched our collaborative efforts,” he said.

The language course, scheduled every Thursday over two months, exemplifies the broader China-Africa cooperation framework. As China and Africa continue to strengthen their partnership, such educational programs play a pivotal role in fostering mutual understanding and achieving shared development goals.
