Huawei Partners with Kenyan to Enhance Digital Skills Development

In a significant move to enhance Kenya’s digital capabilities, Huawei Technologies has entered into a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State Department for Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET). This partnership aims to equip Kenya’s youthful workforce with advanced ICT skills, aligning with the nation’s vision of a digital economy.

Under the terms of the agreement, Huawei will establish 150 ICT academies within Kenya’s TVET institutions. These academies will focus on specialized training in networking, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence. The initiative is expected to help train and certify 1,000 students annually, ensuring that they are well-prepared to meet the demands of the global digital economy.

In addition to training students, the MoU also includes a provision for Huawei to train 150 instructors annually through its Train-the-Trainer program, ensuring that the teaching staff is equipped with the skills needed to deliver high-quality education. To further enhance the program’s impact, Huawei will organize annual ICT competitions, job fairs, and workshops, fostering stronger links between industry and academia and providing students with career opportunities in Kenya’s rapidly growing ICT sector.

Huawei’s investment in digital skills training is part of its broader strategy to support Kenya’s digital transformation and economic development. The company has been a key player in Kenya’s ICT sector for years, contributing to critical infrastructure projects such as the National Optical Fiber Backbone Infrastructure (NOFBI) and the KONZA National Data Center. Furthermore, Huawei played a central role in the launch of East Africa’s first 5G network with Safaricom in 2021.

This collaboration underscores the growing partnership between China and Africa in fostering technological advancement and equipping the continent’s workforce with the skills needed to thrive in a digital world. It is another step forward in building a digitally empowered future for Africa.
