Zambia has applauded Chinese tech giant Huawei for its growing role in driving the country’s digital transformation and expanding access to technology, especially in rural communities.
Speaking at the Huawei 2025 ICT Conference held in Lusaka, Minister of Technology and Science Felix Mutati underscored Zambia’s commitment to collaborating with partners like Huawei to boost national productivity through advanced technology. “The digital transformation of Zambia is not only about technology, it is about the people, progress, and potential,” Mutati said. “It is about empowering communities, bridging inequalities, and creating a future where every Zambian can contribute meaningfully to national development.”
The high-level conference was also attended by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Eng. Dr. Brilliant Habeenzu, Chinese Ambassador to Zambia His Excellency Han Jing, Vice President of Huawei Sub-Saharan Africa Region Mr. Li Chen, and President of Huawei Southern Multi-Country Mr. Robin Yu.
The minister hailed Huawei’s smart village project launched last year in Namwala district, southern Zambia, as a prime example of technology driving inclusive progress. The initiative brought a mini-solar grid to power schools, clinics, and teachers’ residences while connecting the rural area to the world through a new communications tower and internet connectivity.
Huawei reaffirmed its support to Zambia’s Vision 2030 by pledging to continue working closely with government and stakeholders to build a “Cognitive Society” that thrives on innovation, digital equity, and inclusive growth.
With Huawei’s support, Zambia’s digital journey is rapidly gaining ground, positioning the nation as an emerging player in Africa’s tech-driven development narrative.
