Can Standard Bank Turn Africa's RMB Clearing Role into a New Revenue Engine?

Standard Bank’s appointment as a co-operator of the Renminbi (RMB) Clearing Bank of Africa represents more than a symbolic milestone in China-Africa financial cooperation. The bigger question now facing the continent’s largest lender is whether the designation can evolve into a profitable business that extends beyond facilitating existing trade flows.

Authorized by the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) alongside the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), Standard Bank will jointly provide RMB clearing services across 19 African countries. The arrangement is the first PBOC-designated RMB clearing platform established for an entire continent rather than a single country, placing Africa at the center of China’s expanding cross-border financial architecture.
